Thursday, November 14, 2002Who doesn't like a fish story? I've got a creel-full.
Gib Van Cleve discovered a private trout park called SpringRise at Westover and thought we should check it out. We've been to Montauk Springs a few times, and while we've gotten in a little fly fishing there, it's pretty crowded. Not to mention the "corn and marshmallow" crowd... hell! They sell trout at the grocery store.
Gib figured that a place that charged $30 for a day's fishing would be a bit less crowded, and as we examined the SpringRise web site, we were convinced this would be a great place to hone our fly-fishing skills.
Jeff isn't much of a fly fisherman... yet. But he ties his own flies, has pulled at least one out of his scalp, and is an advocate of barbless hooks. He also has caught a few trout on flies that he's tied, so he figures he's hooked.
If you really want to get a feel for the care and effort that's gone into the creation of SpringRise (and its companion park, WindRush Farms Trout Stream), you ought to read Two Streams Rising, an article by Bob McEowen that appeared in the October 2002 issue of Rural Missouri.
The story is a nicely-written history of the SpringRise park, accompanied by some beautiful photos that highlight the "garden fishing" stream.
